Pinhoti Trail

Over 250-miles in length, the Pinhoti Trail is a premier Southeastern long path that travels from Alabama into Georgia. From high, rocky ridges to beautiful lush valleys, hollows, and gorges, the path provides an outstanding wilderness backpacking trip. The path is a lynchpin for the Eastern Continental Trail and Great Eastern Trails. The Pinhoti National Recreation Trail is one of our nation's Millennium Legacy Trails.

On March 16, 2008, the Pinhoti was officially linked to the Appalachian Trail. Photos and video from that celebration will be uploaded soon.

Upcoming AHTS Work Days

Oct 31-Nov 13: Pinhoti Trail / Rebecca Mt / Flagg Mt Work Week
Our big fall work week is coming Oct 31-Nov 13! Here's the latest from coordinator Rick Guhse':

It's time to 'get 'er done'. We'll work Oct. 31st - Nov. 13th. It will be Fall in Alabama and if the color of the foliage here in New Hampshire is any indication of what we can expect in the Appalachians in Alabama, it will be a colorful time to be in the forest!

I leave Keene, NH, on Oct. 27th. We'll camp at Cheaha SP the first week and move to Poplar Springs Camp at Stewartville for the second week. Camping at Cheaha SP at the upper campground is usually free. However, Hartley Frederick replaced David Odum as Park Supervisor and I've got to work out our relationship with him and we may have obligations in Cheaha SP that will be different than before. More on that later.

There is a minimum fee at Poplar Springs Camp. I'll email the fee later in October. There are showers and cabins.

We'll work on the Pinhoti Trail on all of our sections and build new Pinhoti Trail across Rebecca Mt. We'll work at Flagg Mt. and clear and improve that trail. We'll work with Forever Wild and scout the trail corridor in the Coosa WMA.

If we get enough people we will split into two or more crews and clean up the trail faster and go on to other parts of the trail sooner. This is a great morale booster so I hope you can give a day or more to our efforts.

Plan to bring work gloves, a hat, heavy boots, loppers, hand clippers, weed whackers and a trail saw/bow saw. If anybody has fire rakes, please bring them. If camping overnight please bring a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clean clothes, towel, toiletries, and money for meals and groceries. Plan for cool weather and warm weather as we never know what the conditions will be. The US Forest Service now requires each person to wear a construction type helmet and eye protection. If you own such gear please bring it. If you don't, we'll provide it for you. If you plan to work with us often, it's a good idea to begin looking around for a helmet. I think Lowes and Home Depot may sell these items.

Caution: I've contracted really bad cases of chiggers the last couple of times I've worked in AL. So, please bring a sitz pad to sit on. This can be anything from a piece of thick plastic to a stadium seat pad. Plan to bring insect repellent and spray your ankles, boots, socks, and beltline each day before you set out for work.

There will be another email before I leave on Oct. 27th. Please email me if you plan to attend. Please email your friends and invite them to participate. Even if you don't email me that you're coming, come anyway. I understand that some folks will make a last minute decision to come and that's OK. I welcome you. Contact Rick Guhse’ at rguhse@gmail.com or 603-352-3004.

Notices:

A guide to hiking the Eastern Continental Trail / Great Eastern Trail in Alabama is available through AHTS which also provides information on thru-hiking the Pinhoti . The guide is FREE (see above to download.)

Trailheads

New trail is being constructed on Rebecca Mountain and a new trailhead will be established soon.

Northern Terminus: Benton MacKaye Trail, Georgia.

Blazes

Two types of blazing are used: Light blue paint blazes (about the size of a dollar bill) or silver metal or white plastic diamond markers with the famous Pinhoti turkey foot logo.

Off-set blazes (one over the other) indicates a turn in the trail. The top blaze dictates the direction of the turn. If the top blaze is to the left of the bottom, the trail turns left and visa versa.

Rock cairns will be found mark the trail in some areas. Be aware that while hiking in the Dugger Mountain and Cheaha Wilderness, blazes may be few and far between.
